Massive data breach puts South Korean spies at risk, undermines intel gathering and erodes trust with allies
South Korea’s Defense Intelligence Command (DIC) reportedly discovered a leak to North Korea of confidential information about its agents about a month ago, the latest in a string of incidents that have exposed systemic cybersecurity vulnerabilities in the country’s defense apparatus.
The leaked data purportedly included personal details and identities of both “white agents” operating under diplomatic cover and “black agents” who gather intelligence while disguising their identities under civilian cover. The breach reportedly forced the DIC to suspend the activities of some overseas agents and recall them home.
