Both Yoon administration and opposition seek to use labor issues to score political points ahead of next year’s election
The main opposition Democratic Party (DP) and the minor opposition Justice Party (JP) used their majority in the parliamentary labor committee on Tuesday to push through a contentious pro-labor bill that restricts damages suits against striking workers.
The reality, however, is that the bill has little chance of becoming law, something politicians on both sides of the aisle know. Instead, the fight over the bill serves as a proxy for a larger struggle between the Yoon administration and the opposition over the government’s recent efforts to target labor unions, as both sides appeal to supporters ahead of next year’s election.
