With new tariffs set for June 4, South Korea’s next president faces a trade crisis from day one
South Korea’s trade ministry held an emergency meeting with industry officials on Monday in response to U.S. President Donald Trump’s announcement that he would double Section 232 tariffs on steel and aluminum imports to 50% starting June 4. Trump made the remarks on May 30 during a speech at U.S. Steel in Pennsylvania and on social media.
The meeting brought together representatives from major firms including POSCO, Hyundai Steel and Novelis Korea. Participants reviewed the potential impact of the tariff hike and discussed response strategies. The trade ministry said it is working with diplomatic missions and companies operating in the U.S. to gather more information. It pledged to continue consultations with Washington while aiming to minimize the domestic impact if the tariffs are implemented.
