Ruling party unable to mount credible electoral opposition as poll shows majority backing for Lee Jae-myung
Former labor minister Kim Moon-soo formally registered as the People Power Party’s (PPP) presidential candidate on Sunday for the June 3 snap election, ending a week-long standoff triggered by leadership attempts to nullify his nomination and replace him with former Acting President Han Duck-soo. Kim, who won the party primary on May 3, reversed his earlier pledge to unify with Han, prompting the PPP’s emergency committee to revoke his nomination and move to register Han instead. The plan collapsed after a full-party vote rejected the leadership’s decision.
PPP emergency committee chair Kwon Young-se resigned following the vote, while Han announced he would suspend his campaign and support Kim’s bid. In a statement, Kim called for a broad conservative alliance to defeat Democratic Party (DP) candidate Lee Jae-myung. Lee, who is widely viewed as the election frontrunner, registered his candidacy on Saturday.
