A long-delayed investigation into the 2022 Itaewon crowd crush finally began in June 2025, following 31 months of political stalemate, administrative inertia and institutional limitations. However, the probe, led by the Special Investigation Committee for the Itaewon Tragedy, faces significant constraints due to limited legal authority and delayed access to official records.

The committee is examining 49 cases, including crowd management protocols, the roles of government agencies and records related to the incident and its aftermath. It is also assessing secondary victimization — including remarks by then-President Yoon Suk-yeol — and evaluating broader systemic vulnerabilities.
