Briefings Lee government prepares for record heatwave with electricity rate reliefAs heat intensifies, government will also offer utility relief and $362M in emergency funds for vulnerable groups The ruling Democratic Party and relevant ministries held a party-government meeting Tuesday to coordinate measures in anticipation of what they called an “unprecedented” summer heatwave. At the center of the response is a temporary easing of progressive electricity billing thresholds for July and August: raising the first-tier threshold from 200kWh to 300kWh and the second tier from 201-400kWh to 301-450kWh. The adjustment, similar to what Korea Electric Power Corp. (KEPCO) has implemented annually since 2019, is expected to reduce electricity bills for households during peak usage months, providing an average household using 380kWh approximately 9,460 won in monthly savings.
