Appointments prioritize loyalty and coordination, signaling a fast, centralized start to the new administration
South Korean President Lee Jae-myung formally announced his first slate of senior officials on Wednesday. Lee nominated Democratic Party (DP) lawmaker Kim Min-seok as prime minister and named Kang Hoon-sik, a three-term lawmaker from South Chungcheong Province, as chief of staff. Lee also nominated former unification minister Lee Jong-seok to head the National Intelligence Service (NIS) and appointed former diplomat Wi Sung-lac as national security adviser.
Other key appointments include Kang Yu-jung, a first-term lawmaker, as presidential spokesperson, and retired General Hwang In-kwon as head of the Presidential Security Service. While the appointments of the prime minister and NIS director require National Assembly confirmation, the DP holds a legislative majority, making their approvals likely. Lee said the selections reflect an emphasis on “professionalism, trust and capacity for coordination.”
