Lee calls for unity, democratic restoration and inclusive growth in speech after taking office without transition

Lee Jae-myung was sworn in Wednesday as South Korea’s 21st president, officially assuming office following a snap election prompted by his predecessor’s impeachment. In a convincing victory, Lee secured 49.42% of the vote, defeating People Power Party candidate Kim Moon-soo, who garnered 41.15%.
The 61-year-old former governor of Gyeonggi Province and leader of the Democratic Party succeeds former President Yoon Suk-yeol, who was removed from office by the Constitutional Court on April 4 following his attempt to impose martial law in Dec. 2024.
