New rules give preference to local supply chains, expand RE100 access and reward state-developed technologies
South Korea on Monday announced a new round of renewable energy bidding, aiming to boost wind and solar power generation while aligning projects with national priorities. For the first time, the government will offer a public-led offshore wind tender alongside its general bidding round, with a combined capacity of over 1.2 gigawatts. Solar capacity will be capped at 1 gigawatt, with slightly lower pricing thresholds than last year. Winning projects will be awarded fixed-price contracts, with oversight by the Korea Energy Agency.
The bidding process includes new rules that reflect growing concerns over energy security and corporate demand for clean power. Wind project proposals will be evaluated partly on their ability to reduce foreign reliance and strengthen domestic supply chains. Developers using state-backed wind technology will receive pricing advantages. In the solar round, stricter standards will apply to low-carbon equipment eligible for bonus payments. The government also expanded a program that helps global companies meet RE100 goals by making it easier to sign long-term renewable power contracts with South Korean producers.
