Kim Moon-soo’s nomination positions PPP to unify, but his weak popularity may undercut challenge to Lee Jae-myung
The People Power Party (PPP) on Saturday nominated former labor minister Kim Moon-soo as its presidential candidate, defeating former party leader Han Dong-hoon with 56.5% of the vote. Kim pledged to form a unified conservative front by holding talks with former Acting President Han Duck-soo, who announced an independent bid a day earlier.
In his acceptance speech, Kim framed the upcoming June 3 snap election as a choice between “freedom and dictatorship,” criticized Democratic Party candidate Lee Jae-myung and called for sweeping constitutional reform. The PPP said it will form a task force to negotiate a merger with Han’s camp ahead of the May 11 candidate registration deadline.
