No-sail zone declared in disputed EEZ area draws muted response from Seoul amid presidential transition
South Korea’s foreign ministry convened an interagency meeting Tuesday to discuss China’s recent declaration of a no-sail zone in the Yellow Sea, where the two countries’ exclusive economic zones (EEZs) overlap. The meeting, chaired by Director-General for Northeast and Central Asia Kang Young-shin, included senior officials from the defense and maritime ministries.
Beijing’s Maritime Safety Administration last week announced temporary navigation restrictions in a portion of the Yellow Sea. The area falls within what Seoul considers its EEZ, prompting concerns over China’s growing unilateral actions in disputed waters. The foreign ministry said it would continue monitoring the situation and coordinate with other agencies to ensure South Korea’s maritime rights are not infringed.
