Industrial production, retail sales and investment increase, but central bank’s sentiment index signals caution ahead
South Korea’s industrial production, consumption, and investment all increased in February, marking a rebound after a decline in January, according to data released by South Korea’s National Statistical Office (Statistics Korea) on Monday. The total industrial production index rose 0.6% from the previous month, driven by gains in mining and manufacturing output, which climbed 1.0%. Construction production increased by 1.5%, reversing a seven-month downward trend, while service output grew by 0.5%. Retail sales rose by 1.5%, led by higher demand for durable goods such as communication devices and automobiles. Facility investment surged 18.7%, reflecting a rise in spending on machinery and transportation equipment.
The coincident composite index, which tracks the current state of the economy, rose by 0.1 percentage points from January, while the leading composite index, which predicts future economic activity, also climbed 0.1 percentage points.
