Diplomatic spat shows Washington’s willingness to penalize allies on immigration, trade and security disputes
The U.S. and Colombia reached an agreement on Monday to resolve a diplomatic standoff sparked by Bogota’s abrupt refusal to accept U.S. repatriation flights carrying deported Colombian nationals. U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio accused Colombian President Gustavo Petro of canceling flight authorizations mid-air and implemented swift retaliatory measures, including a suspension of visa issuance at the U.S. Embassy in Bogota and the authorization of visa restrictions on Colombian officials and their families. U.S. President Donald Trump also announced emergency tariffs of 25% on all Colombian imports, threatening to raise them to 50% unless Colombia complied.
Colombia’s government confirmed the resolution, with Foreign Minister Luis Gilberto Murillo and Ambassador Daniel Garcsa-Pena set to meet U.S. officials in Washington to solidify agreements reached through diplomatic exchanges. The visa sanctions remain in effect until the first group of deportees is successfully returned.
