Seoul targets advanced industries to safeguard exports and counter rising U.S. protectionism under Trump
South Korea’s industry minister Ahn Duck-geun visited the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) on Tuesday. During his meeting with KITA Chairman Yoon Jin-sik, Ahn emphasized the importance of a coordinated “One Team” approach between the public and private sectors to sustain South Korea’s export momentum. Ahn acknowledged headwinds in key export sectors, including semiconductors and automobiles, while outlining the government’s plans to unveil an inter-ministerial emergency export strategy by Feb. 2025.
Ahn further urged KITA to strengthen its role as a trade think tank, particularly in supporting exporters navigating rising protectionist measures in major economies, including the U.S. The minister also attended KITA’s World Trade Forum, where he discussed strategies to address geopolitical risks, protectionism and supply chain realignments.
