U.S. President Joe Biden signed into law an annual defense policy bill — the Servicemember Quality of Life Improvement and National Defense Authorization Act for Fiscal Year 2025 — on Monday. The $895 billion defense policy bill funds the Department of Defense and other national security programs, solidifying U.S. commitments to allies while supporting military personnel and their families.

Key to the legislation is its emphasis on maintaining the presence of 28,500 U.S. troops in South Korea and reinforcing the U.S. extended deterrence pledge to Seoul. The defense policy bill highlighted the “sense of Congress” that the U.S. secretary of defense should reinforce Washington’s alliance with Seoul.
