The opposition Democratic Party (DP) in South Korea risks losing public trust and sidelining urgent issues as it pushes for controversial impeachment hearings against President Yoon Suk-yeol. The hearings, initiated by a viral online petition, have focused less on impeaching the president and more on addressing other allegations against top officials and the first lady.
The ruling People Power Party (PPP) is accusing the DP of violating constitutional rules by holding these hearings. Despite these accusations, the DP held the first round of hearings on July 19 after the petition garnered 1.43 million signatures, surpassing the 50,000-signature threshold required to prompt a discussion in parliamentary committees.
