Han Dong-hoon might challenge president’s authority, but independent stance may shield Yoon from impeachment
South Korea’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) elected Han Dong-hoon as its new leader with nearly 63% of the votes on Tuesday. Three other candidates ran for the position: Na Kyung-won, Won Hee-ryong and Yoon Sang-hyun. The other three candidates trailed behind Han, and they failed to consolidate their candidacies to defeat Han. Han secured a majority of the votes in the four-way race, nullifying the need for a runoff election.
Han returns to head the party nearly three months after he resigned as interim leader to take responsibility for the party’s defeat in April’s parliamentary elections. The party did not have a formal leader for seven months since the last party leader, Kim Gi-hyeon, suddenly resigned in December.
