The indictment could chill Korea-focused think tanks and complicate South Korea’s lobbying efforts in the US
Sue Mi Terry, a former Central Intelligence Agency analyst and senior White House National Security Council official, has been indicted for acting as an unregistered agent of South Korea. While the South Korean government declined to comment, stating that it would be “inappropriate,” her indictment made top headlines in the ROK, with numerous experts expressing concern about its potential impact on South Korea’s foreign policy.
Charges against Terry include disclosing U.S. government information and facilitating U.S.-ROK meetings without registering as a foreign agent and allegedly receiving luxury goods, high-priced dinners and over $37,000 in covert funding from South Korea’s National Intelligence Service officers for her activities. Terry worked for multiple think tanks throughout the period, and she faces potential forfeiture of any property derived from proceeds traceable to these alleged offenses.
