Blinken’s visit comes amid growing concerns about the country’s democratic backsliding under President Yoon Suk-yeol
U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken arrived in South Korea on Sunday for a two-day visit to attend the Summit for Democracy, a U.S.-led gathering aimed at bolstering solidarity among democratic nations. South Korea is hosting this year’s summit — the third of its kind — from March 18 to 20, including ministerial sessions, panel discussions and a virtual leaders’ session.
During his visit, Blinken is scheduled to meet with South Korean foreign minister Cho Tae-yul to discuss democracy cooperation, the U.S.-ROK alliance and regional issues, including the Korean Peninsula’s security situation. Blinken is also expected to meet with President Yoon Suk-yeol during his stay.
