The Democratic Party (DP) is making a strategic mistake. Its decision to impeach Acting President Choi Sang-mok isn’t just a political gamble — it’s a desperate move fueled by growing anxiety over President Yoon Suk-yeol’s impeachment trial and party leader Lee Jae-myung’s upcoming appeal ruling.

The DP’s aggressive push reflects a party that feels politically exposed, and if Choi’s impeachment backfires, it could cost them voter trust and the next election.

Choi’s removal would mark the third impeachment of a sitting leader in five months — a staggering level of political escalation. After already forcing out Yoon and Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, the DP’s effort to remove Choi looks less like a principled defense of constitutional order and more like strategic overreach.

The ruling People Power Party (PPP) will seize on this, and swing voters might respond by shifting back toward the conservatives. If voters interpret this as parliamentary overreach or political opportunism, the DP’s fragile polling lead could evaporate quickly.

POLITICAL OVERREACH AND MISCALCULATION

The DP’s decision to impeach Choi follows a clear pattern. After successfully impeaching Yoon for his martial law declaration with the help of other minor parties and some PPP lawmakers, the DP used its parliamentary majority to remove Prime Minister Han weeks later for refusing to appoint DP-backed Constitutional Court nominees.

Now, they are going after Choi — the acting president, deputy prime minister and finance minister — for refusing to appoint Ma Eun-hyuk to the court. While the DP’s argument is technically rooted in constitutional procedure, the political context makes it look suspiciously like overreach.

Voters are not blind to this pattern. Even DP-friendly voters might start asking whether the party is trying to consolidate power through parliamentary force rather than electoral legitimacy.

The PPP has already laid the groundwork to weaponize this narrative. It will likely frame the latest impeachment spree as an attempt to seize total control of the executive branch. If Choi is impeached, the opposition will claim that the DP is attempting to install a puppet leader — a powerful message that could resonate with conservative and swing voters.

The DP’s fragile lead in the polls shows how vulnerable it is. The latest Gallup Korea poll puts the DP at 40% and the PPP at 36% — a slim four-point margin that could disappear overnight if swing voters see the DP’s impeachment push as politically excessive.

The risk is that the DP, in its effort to protect itself from political vulnerability, is opening itself up to a broader political backlash. If voters see the DP as destabilizing the government, the PPP could reclaim the mantle of stability and ride that message into the next election.

THE DP’S MOTIVATION AND ANXIETY

The DP’s impeachment push against Choi isn’t just a political power play; it’s a response to growing pressure on multiple fronts. The delayed ruling on Yoon’s impeachment and party leader Lee Jae-myung’s upcoming appeal have created political uncertainty, and the DP’s impeachment push reflects that anxiety.

Yoon’s impeachment trial has dragged on longer than expected, potentially raising concerns within the DP that the Constitutional Court might reinstate him. That would be a political disaster for the DP, as it would make the party’s previous impeachment moves look illegitimate and hand a political victory to the PPP.

Lee Jae-myung’s situation is even more precarious. Lee was convicted of violating election laws in November, but he appealed the ruling to the Seoul High Court. The appeals court is set to rule on March 26 — just two days after the Constitutional Court will rule on Han’s impeachment.

If the court upholds Lee’s conviction, the DP would face a nightmare scenario. Lee remains the party’s dominant figure, but a legally damaged candidate would be a massive liability in a snap election. If voters see the DP trying to push a convicted politician into the presidency, it could erode the party’s credibility with swing voters.

This explains the DP’s aggressive tone toward the court in recent days. Leading DP lawmakers have accused the Constitutional Court of dragging its feet and operating under political influence. DP floor leader Park Chan-dae slammed the court for its slower-than-expected ruling, saying that it was moving at a “snail’s pace” and that justices should explain themselves.

Jeon Hyun-hee, a member of the party’s supreme council, said that “delayed justice is not justice.”

This isn’t the language of a party acting from a position of strength. It’s the language of a party that feels politically threatened. The DP’s impeachment push against Choi is less about constitutional order and more about preemptive damage control.

If Lee’s appeal fails or Han is reinstated, the DP wants to ensure that they have firm control over the political narrative. But in trying to control the outcome, the DP might be setting itself up for failure.

POLITICAL FALLOUT AND VOTER BACKLASH

If Choi is removed, the political fallout could be immediate and severe. The DP’s impeachment push would almost certainly destabilize the government. Markets would react negatively to the removal of a key figure in South Korea’s economic leadership, especially as Choi has played a central role in managing trade relations with the U.S. and China.

If the Seoul High Court upholds Lee’s conviction on March 26 — most likely before the Constitutional Court issues its ruling on Yoon’s impeachment but after it rules on Han’s — the DP could be left facing an exonerated prime minister while having to defend a convicted presidential candidate at the same time. That would be a politically toxic combination.

The broader political picture would shift rapidly. The PPP could frame itself as the party of stability and responsible governance, while the DP would be forced to explain why its impeachment strategy led to both political and economic instability.

The DP’s impeachment push against Choi isn’t a strategic masterstroke; it’s a defensive, anxious move driven by fear of political weakness. And if that fear translates into political instability, the voters will deliver their own verdict.

HIGH STAKES GAMBLE

The DP’s impeachment strategy reflects political desperation, not strategic strength. Faced with the possibility that Yoon and Han’s impeachment could be overturned while Lee’s conviction could hold, the DP is trying to seize control of the executive branch through parliamentary muscle.

Despite the majority of voters still supporting Yoon’s impeachment and the DP taking over the reins, this kind of overreach rarely plays well with voters.

If the impeachment effort destabilizes the government or triggers market instability, the DP will face immediate political consequences. Swing voters could turn toward the PPP as the more stable option. If Lee’s conviction holds, the DP’s leadership crisis will deepen — and the political fallout could be catastrophic.
