{"id":2208600,"date":"2025-03-04T08:00:13","date_gmt":"2025-03-03T23:00:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/?p=2208600"},"modified":"2025-03-03T13:38:16","modified_gmt":"2025-03-03T04:38:16","slug":"polls-show-democratic-party-pulling-ahead-as-conservative-scandal-widens","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2025\/03\/polls-show-democratic-party-pulling-ahead-as-conservative-scandal-widens\/","title":{"rendered":"Polls show Democratic Party pulling ahead as conservative scandal widens"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Democratic Party (DP) has widened its lead over the ruling People Power Party (PPP), according to the latest Gallup Korea and Realmeter surveys, as the opposition capitalizes on public dissatisfaction with President Yoon Suk-yeol\u2019s impeachment trial and a growing corruption scandal within the conservative bloc.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.gallup.co.kr\/gallupdb\/reportContent.asp?seqNo=1543\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Gallup Korea poll<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> conducted from Feb. 25 to 27 found DP support at 38% and PPP at 36%, while a <\/span><a href=\"http:\/\/www.realmeter.net\/%ec%97%90%eb%84%88%ec%a7%80%ea%b2%bd%ec%a0%9c%ec%8b%a0%eb%ac%b8-%eb%a6%ac%ec%96%bc%eb%af%b8%ed%84%b0-2%ec%9b%94-4%ec%a3%bc-%ec%b0%a8-%ec%a3%bc%ea%b0%84-%eb%8f%99%ed%96%a5-%e9%87%8e-%ec%a0%95\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Realmeter survey<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from Feb. 26 to 28 showed a wider gap, with DP at 44.2% (+3.1 points) and PPP at 37.6% (-5.1 points). Lee Jae-myung remains the dominant presidential contender, leading all conservative rivals by double-digit margins in hypothetical head-to-head matchups. The highest-polling conservative, Labor Minister Kim Moon-soo (18.9%), still trails Lee by more than 27 percentage points, while Seoul Mayor Oh Se-hoon (5.1%) and Daegu Mayor Hong Jun-pyo (6.8%) remain stuck in single digits amid allegations linked to the Myung Tae-gyun corruption scandal.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WHY IT MATTERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The PPP is facing a deepening crisis, struggling to contain the fallout from Yoon\u2019s impeachment while managing the expanding <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2024\/11\/yoon-battles-scandal-as-calls-for-probe-on-first-ladys-influence-gain-momentum\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Myung Tae-gyun scandal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. With no clear conservative frontrunner, the party risks entering a potential snap election fractured and leaderless. Once seen as serious contenders, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/03\/why-the-mayor-of-seoul-a-municipal-leader-is-calling-for-nuclear-weapons\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Oh<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and Hong have failed to gain traction, while <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2024\/09\/kim-moon-soo-from-activist-to-conservative-politician-his-own-worst-enemy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Kim Moon-soo<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> remains too polarizing to attract moderates. Former PPP leader <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2024\/03\/korea-insider-han-dong-hoons-rise-from-prosecutor-to-presidential-frontrunner\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Han Dong-hoon\u2019s<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> return to politics has further fragmented the right, adding to the uncertainty surrounding the party\u2019s leadership struggle.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At the center of the PPP\u2019s internal turmoil is the Myung Tae-gyun scandal, which has exposed allegations of illegal election interference and influence-peddling within the party. Myung, a businessman and self-proclaimed political broker, allegedly ran unauthorized polls and brokered nominations for conservative candidates in exchange for money or political favors. Prosecutors have expanded their probe, executing search warrants on key figures, including associates of Oh and Hong, fueling speculation that both may have benefited from illicit campaign activities.
