While primarily targeting the few large industrial users that account for more than half of total power consumption, government officials on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yna.co.kr\/view\/AKR20241023052151003\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Wednesday<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsis.com\/view\/NISX20241023_0002930870\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defended<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the hike by noting that Korea&#8217;s electricity rates in general rank low among OECD nations.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The move comes as the Korea Electric Power Corporation (KEPCO) <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.yonhapnewstv.co.kr\/news\/MYH20241023006400641\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">grapples<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with around $147 billion in debt and around $30 billion in accumulated losses. Its selective increase, which will impact major technology and steel companies more heavily, is expected to generate a moderate level of additional annual revenue for the debt-laden utility.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WHY IT MATTERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increase falls well short of addressing KEPCO&#8217;s financial health, defying <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/m.edaily.co.kr\/News\/Read?newsId=01282486635804408&amp;mediaCodeNo=257\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">various<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.newshyu.com\/news\/articleView.html?idxno=1012223\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">expert<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.mk.co.kr\/news\/economy\/10869589\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recommendations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over the past year which called for steeper hikes across all sectors \u2014 including household electricity prices \u2014 to help cover the company&#8217;s interest payments, which now amount to over $80 million daily.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Despite KEPCO&#8217;s financial woes, Wednesday&#8217;s announcement of the selective price hike poses significant challenges for major businesses that drive the country&#8217;s exports. The top 20 corporate users, which consumed 85,900 GWh last year, are expected to pay <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yna.co.kr\/view\/AKR20241023052151003\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">additional<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> fees totaling some $870 million annually under the new rates.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The increased power costs will particularly impact semiconductor companies like Samsung Electronics, SK Hynix, and steel manufacturers, who rely heavily on electricity for their operations.
