South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol arrived in the Philippines on Sunday for a state visit to strengthen bilateral ties. Yoon met with Philippine President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Monday to mark the 75th anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. The leaders agreed to elevate their bilateral relationship to a strategic partnership during their talks. Discussions covered trade, defense and nuclear energy.

In addition to bilateral talks, Yoon laid a wreath at the Korean War Memorial and attended a business forum to promote investment between the two nations. South Korea is keen to expand its economic footprint in the Philippines, particularly in defense exports and energy infrastructure projects.

WHY IT MATTERS

Yoon’s visit to the Philippines signals South Korea’s intent to deepen its strategic and economic ties with Southeast Asia beyond its reliance on Vietnam. Yoon and Marcos’ focus on defense cooperation will likely bolster South Korea’s defense sector, but it may strain Seoul’s relations with Beijing. Philippine-China relations have chilled in recent months due to ongoing maritime disputes in the South China Sea.

While South Korea and the Philippines signed a memorandum of understanding for a feasibility study to see if the Bataan nuclear power plant is safe, it has never been used. It remains to be seen if the facility is fit for use. It is also unclear if Marcos has the political capital to push such a project. While Marcos enjoys a 65% approval rate, it is a significant drop from his 80% approval rate in June.
