Among the nine contenders in Japan’s ruling party leadership election, three have reportedly gained significant traction, according to Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper. Sanae Takaichi, Shigeru Ishiba and Shinjiro Koizumi are in a close race, with Takaichi and Ishiba each securing 123 projected votes. Takaichi is focusing on gaining party member support while Ishiba struggles to improve his standing among lawmakers.

Koizumi, the son of former Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi, has gained momentum with the addition of Economy Minister Satoshi Saito to his team. Both Takaichi and Koizumi are emphasizing local support as lawmakers prepare for possible national elections. Voting for party members began on Tuesday.

WHY IT MATTERS

The top three contenders for Japan’s ruling Liberal Democratic Party leadership present risks and opportunities for South Korea. If Takaichi wins, her stance on visiting the Yasukuni Shrine, which honors Japan’s war dead, including Class-A World War II criminals, and her claims over the Dokdo (Takeshima) islands could undo recent progress in Seoul-Tokyo relations.

Takaichi’s revisionist views on Japan’s wartime history may spark heightened criticism from the opposition Democratic Party and South Korean citizens alike. This will likely further tank South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s low approval rate and jeopardize his ability to govern effectively for the remainder of his term.

In contrast, Koizumi, though also having visited Yasukuni Shrine, has emphasized strengthening the U.S.-Japan alliance and expanding cooperation with like-minded countries, aligning with Yoon’s stance. Ishiba, a former defense minister, has advocated for closer cooperation with South Korea, potentially providing a pragmatic approach to regional security.
