Westinghouse Electric Company LLC and Electricite de France (EDF) <\/span>filed complaints<\/span><\/a> last week with the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition against Prague\u2019s <\/span>selection<\/span><\/a> of South Korea\u2019s Korea Hydro & Nuclear Power Company (KHNP) as the preferred supplier for the Central European country\u2019s new nuclear power plant.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n EDF contests the supplier selection decision, while Westinghouse alleges \u201cviolations of procurement principles and errors in the selection process.\u201d Westinghouse seeks the cancelation of KHNP\u2019s preferred status and EDF\u2019s inclusion, as well as the reversal of its own <\/span>exclusion<\/span><\/a> from the bidding stage. The Czech government has initiated administrative proceedings but has withheld further comment until it has completed its initial review of the complaints.<\/span><\/p>\n WHY IT MATTERS<\/b><\/p>\n KHNP\u2019s selection as the preferred bidder for the Czech Republic\u2019s <\/span>$17.4 billion nuclear project<\/span><\/a> faces significant challenges. Westinghouse and EDF\u2019s complaints may delay or even derail the project. Westinghouse has claimed that KHNP\u2019s APR1000 and APR1400 reactor designs utilize Westinghouse-licensed technology and that KHNP cannot export those reactors without its approval.<\/span><\/p>\n
