Police reported a tenfold increase in deepfake-related crime reports last week, with 88 cases leading to the identification of 24 suspects.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Authorities are probing eight Telegram bots that generate deepfake sexual content and examining related group chats. The police stated that the investigation faces challenges due to Telegram\u2019s reluctance to share user data with law enforcement agencies. The police also stated that it aims to collaborate with international partners to enhance their investigative capabilities against Telegram-facilitated crimes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WHY IT MATTERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korea faces an escalating crisis of deepfake sex crimes, with requests to block or remove explicit videos nearly quadrupling from 1,913 in 2021 to 7,187 in 2023, according to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/6\/2024\/06\/%EC%9E%90%EB%A3%8C%EC%9A%94%EA%B5%AC%EB%B0%A9%EC%86%A1%ED%86%B5%EC%8B%A0%EC%8B%AC%EC%9D%98%EC%9C%84%EC%9B%90%ED%9A%8C-%EA%B3%A0%EB%AF%BC%EC%A0%95-%EC%9D%98%EC%9B%90%EB%8B%98-%EC%9A%94%EA%B5%AC%EC%9E%90%EB%A3%8C%EC%84%B1%EC%A0%81-%ED%97%88%EC%9C%84%EC%98%81%EC%83%81-%EC%8B%AC%EC%9C%BC-%EA%B4%80-2-1.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">data<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the Korea Communications Standards Commission (KCSC). Globally, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2024\/06\/south-koreas-deepfake-sex-crime-epidemic-exposes-lack-of-legal-protections\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">98%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of deepfake videos were identified as pornography, with 99% targeting women and 53% being South Korean celebrities, as reported by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.securityhero.io\/state-of-deepfakes\/#key-findings\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Home Security Heroes<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a U.S. security-related startup.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Combating these crimes proves challenging due to technological advancements and legal limitations. The KCSC\u2019s removal rate for explicit fake videos stands at only 2.3% from June 2020 to April 2024. In 2021, only <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/yonghyein.kr\/inspection\/?q=YToyOntzOjEyOiJrZXl3b3JkX3R5cGUiO3M6MzoiYWxsIjtzOjQ6InBhZ2UiO2k6MTt9&amp;bmode=view&amp;idx=13119322&amp;t=board&amp;category=00J05G6848\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">157<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of South Korea\u2019s 258 police stations had dedicated cyber investigation teams, with each cybercrime investigator handling an average of 200 cases.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korea\u2019s investigation into Telegram Corporation signals a shift toward holding platforms accountable.
