The Hanwha Armoured Vehicle Center of Excellence (H-ACE) will produce 30 AS9 self-propelled howitzers and 15 AS10 ammunition resupply vehicles starting in late 2024, with production of 129 Redback infantry fighting vehicles slated for 2026.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The facility spans about 37 acres (150,000 square meters) and comprises 11 structures, including production buildings, a 1200-meter test track, a deep-water test facility and an obstacle course. The construction phase created approximately 100 jobs in Geelong, while the production of Redback vehicles alone is forecast to support about 2,100 jobs, including 1,800 direct positions.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WHY IT MATTERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">H-ACE signals a deepening of ROK-Australia defense and economic ties, aligning with President Yoon Suk-yeol\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nknews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/ROK-Indo-Pacific-Strategy-Dec-2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indo-Pacific strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and the Australian government\u2019s commitment to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defence.gov.au\/business-industry\/industry-capability-programs\/sovereign-defence-industrial-priorities\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sovereign defense manufacturing capabilities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This venture will likely boost Geelong\u2019s manufacturing sector and enable Changwon\u2019s defense industry through increased component exports, such as engines, transmissions and drive systems, to H-ACE. Changwon, South Gyeongsang Province, is Hanwha Aerospace\u2019s main production base. The partnership will also likely enhance Seoul&#8217;s strategic value to AUKUS and Five Eyes countries.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The appointment of former admiral <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2024\/06\/former-admiral-sails-toward-ambassador-post-as-seoul-canberra-ties-deepen\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Sim Seung-seob<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as South Korea\u2019s ambassador to Australia emphasizes Seoul\u2019s commitment to nurturing its ties with Canberra. Sim\u2019s military background positions him to facilitate deeper defense cooperation between the two countries.
