The initiative aims to decarbonize corporate power usage and achieve carbon neutrality in industrial processes, with support from eight countries, including the U.K., France and Japan.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Industry minister Ahn Duk-geun hosted an expert roundtable to review progress on the CFE Initiative. The ministry plans to launch a global working group in October to establish a comprehensive implementation framework. Experts emphasized the importance of CFE expansion for supply stability, economic feasibility and environmental sustainability.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WHY IT MATTERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The CFE Initiative appears to be the South Korean government\u2019s attempt to address criticism of its slow renewable energy adoption, but it may lack substance. While MOTIE plans to expand carbon-free energy supply to boost competitiveness and meet global regulations, the 11th Basic Plan for Electricity Supply and Demand reveals a 2030 renewable energy target of just <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2024\/06\/south-koreas-sluggish-renewable-energy-transition-puts-economy-at-risk\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">21.6%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, a mere 0.1% increase from the previous plan, which was published in 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korean businesses face increasing pressure from international partners and regulations like the European Union\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/07\/south-korea-struggles-to-adapt-to-europes-new-emission-rules\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Carbon Border Adjustment Mechanism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
