The agreement aims to enhance market access and cooperation between the two countries, with discussions covering various sectors, including goods, services, investment, digital, government procurement, intellectual property rights and cooperation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The South Korean delegation, led by Roh Keon-ki, deputy minister for free trade agreement (FTA) negotiations, sees the EPA as an opportunity to boost the competitiveness of Korean exporters and small and medium-sized businesses (SMEs) in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) region, particularly in Thailand, which is the second-largest economy and largest manufacturing hub in the region. The two countries, already part of the ROK-ASEAN FTA and the Regional Comprehensive Economic Partnership (RCEP), seek to further improve trade and economic cooperation through this customized agreement.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>WHY IT MATTERS<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EPA negotiation is the latest step in South Korea\u2019s efforts to strengthen ties with ASEAN countries, aligning with President Yoon Suk-yeol\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nknews.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/12\/ROK-Indo-Pacific-Strategy-Dec-2022.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indo-Pacific Strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The agreement could serve as a gateway for Korean SMEs to expand their presence in the region. This follows South Korea\u2019s successful <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/investmentpolicy.unctad.org\/international-investment-agreements\/treaties\/treaties-with-investment-provisions\/3587\/korea-republic-of---viet-nam-fta-2015-\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">FTA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> with Vietnam in 2015 and the elevation of their relationship to a \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/eng.president.go.kr\/briefing\/VvzuZ7cT\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comprehensive strategic partnership<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d in Dec. 2022.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The EPA may ease labor movement between the two countries, addressing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/07\/hanwha-ocean-and-vietnam-ink-mou-to-develop-human-resources-in-shipping-sector\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">labor shortages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> faced by South Korean shipbuilding companies.
