South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol will attend the 2024 North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) Summit in Washington, D.C. from Wednesday to Thursday, marking his third consecutive year at the event. Yoon plans to hold bilateral meetings with leaders from NATO member states and Indo-Pacific partners focusing on energy and security cooperation and will deliver a speech on global security at the NATO Public Forum.<\/span><\/p>\n Prior to the summit, Yoon will visit Honolulu, Hawaii, from Monday to Tuesday to strengthen the U.S.-South Korea security alliance, including a visit to the U.S. Indo-Pacific Command. Yoon is set to use the NATO summit to warn about the growing military cooperation between North Korea and Russia.<\/span><\/p>\n WHY IT MATTERS<\/b><\/p>\n Yoon is expected to attend the Indo-Pacific Four (IP4) summit alongside Japan, Australia and New Zealand, where they will discuss <\/span>flagship projects<\/span><\/a> on Ukraine, cybersecurity and new technologies. Additionally, South Korea may explore ways to expand intelligence sharing and defense industrial cooperation with NATO member states.<\/span><\/p>\n Yoon will likely use the NATO platform to coordinate with NATO member states to counter the challenges posed by the Moscow-Pyongyang partnership. He may also announce increased support for Ukraine, but it is unlikely that he will pledge to provide lethal military assistance. In response to Russian leader Vladimir Putin\u2019s visit to Pyongyang in June, ROK national security adviser <\/span>Chang Ho-jin<\/span><\/a> stated that South Korea\u2019s provision of weapons to Ukraine \u201cdepends on what Russia will do.\u201d Russia does not appear to have provided North Korea with precision weapons thus far.<\/span><\/p>\n
