Han Dong-hoon, former interim leader of the ruling People Power Party (PPP), officially announced his bid for party chief on Sunday, along with lawmaker Na Kyung-won and former land minister Won Hee-ryong. Han pledged to propose a bill for a special prosecution into alleged interference by the presidential office and defense ministry in the investigation of a marine’s death in July 2023.

Han, a former justice minister and close ally of President Yoon Suk-yeol, emphasized his intention to establish more equal party-government relations, promising to provide “reasonable checks, criticism and suggestions” when necessary. Na vowed to revamp the party and ruled out a presidential run, while Won stressed his commitment to the Yoon administration’s success. The PPP will hold a national convention on July 23 to elect a new leader following its defeat in April’s parliamentary elections.

Why It Matters

Han appears to be the favorite to become the PPP’s next leader, with a recent poll showing that 59% of PPP supporters back him. However, his bid faces significant challenges. His pledge for the Corporal Chae Special Counsel Act will put him at odds with the presidential office. Yoon vetoed the bill in May, citing the need to first see the results of an ongoing investigation by the police and the Corruption Investigation Office for High-Ranking Officials before mandating a special counsel investigation.

Han has distanced himself from Yoon since he began campaigning for the PPP during April’s parliamentary elections. During the elections, Han suggested that the president make a formal apology over the first lady’s Dior bag scandal, which resulted in a public, albeit short, fallout with the presidential office. Additionally, he stated during the final days of the election that the government’s failure to meet voters’ expectations wasn’t his responsibility, suggesting the blame lay with Yoon.
