Cho highlighted the historical ties between South Korea and the region, noting the support provided by Central and South American nations during the Korean War and the recent establishment of diplomatic relations with <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2024\/02\/south-korea-cuba-diplomatic-ties-present-geopolitical-trade-wins-but-face-risks\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cuba<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The meeting explored potential areas for increased collaboration, including defense, aerospace and electric and hydrogen vehicles. Cho expressed hope for further cooperation during the upcoming ROK-Central and South America Future Cooperation Forum in June and the G20 and APEC summit meetings in November.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cho\u2019s meeting with the 17 Central and South American ambassadors and charg\u00e9s d\u2019affaires underscores the region\u2019s growing importance to South Korea.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/overseas.mofa.go.kr\/eng\/brd\/m_5676\/view.do?seq=322199&amp;srchFr=&amp;amp;srchTo=&amp;amp;srchWord=&amp;amp;srchTp=&amp;amp;multi_itm_seq=0&amp;amp;itm_seq_1=0&amp;amp;itm_seq_2=0&amp;amp;company_cd=&amp;amp;company_nm=\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2023 Korea-Latin America Future Cooperation Forum<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, then-foreign minister Park Jin emphasized the Yoon administration\u2019s diplomatic vision and the importance of cooperation with Latin American countries, in line with Seoul\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2022\/12\/seouls-cautious-indo-pacific-strategy-maintains-balance-between-us-and-china\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Indo-Pacific Strategy<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. However, despite these remarks, South Korea has not prioritized Latin America in its diplomatic outreach to the same extent as other regions, instead focusing on strengthening ties with the U.S., Europe, Japan, Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korea and Mercosur, South America\u2019s leading trade bloc, began their first free trade negotiations in 2018, but talks are still ongoing.
