He highlighted the technological features of ROK frigates, such as hybrid engines and active electronically scanned array (AESA) radar systems. Shin noted their proven track record with exports and operational successes in the Philippines and Thailand.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Shin\u2019s discussions with Australian defense officials, including Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defense Richard Marles, also covered the strategic and cooperative benefits of selecting South Korean frigates. He underlined Seoul\u2019s readiness to deliver three frigates by 2029 and support local construction and technology transfer, aiming to strengthen bilateral defense ties and regional maritime security.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korea and Australia have strengthened their ties, which have been marked by regular high-level <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.president.go.kr\/newsroom\/press\/CTPxtzet\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">2+2 meetings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The importance of these bilateral discussions will likely continue to grow as Australia increases its defense expenditures in response to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sbs.com.au\/news\/article\/anthony-albanese-condemns-china-over-unacceptable-fighter-jet-actions\/zjpzatgf4\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">aggressive maneuvers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by the Chinese military in nearby waters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korea will likely attempt to take advantage of this relationship to secure naval ship contracts with Australia. However, it faces significant competition from Japan, which is aggressively pursuing <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thediplomat.com\/2024\/03\/australia-lists-japans-mogami-class-as-1-of-4-contenders-for-its-next-frigate\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar export opportunities<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
