Lee, who served as defense minister from May 2022 to Oct. 2023, is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/08\/how-a-botched-military-probe-risks-eroding-south-korean-national-security\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accused<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of improperly influencing a probe into the death of a marine during floods last year. Lee faced mounting <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2024\/03\/former-south-korean-defense-ministers-appointment-as-envoy-sparks-controversy\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">criticism<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> over his departure despite being subject to an investigation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Critics accused Lee of fleeing the investigation by leaving for Canberra shortly after the exit ban was lifted, although he denies any wrongdoing. Lee returned to Seoul on March 21 to attend a defense cooperation meeting. According to his lawyer, Lee plans to stay in Seoul and respond to all procedures, despite not being summoned for questioning by the Corruption Investigation Office for High-ranking Officials.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lee\u2019s resignation has likely dealt a blow to the ruling People Power Party (PPP) just days before the April 10 parliamentary elections.
