South Korea’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) announced Thursday the selection of justice minister Han Dong-hoon as its interim leader, positioning him as a key figure for the upcoming general elections in April. Han, a close confidant of President Yoon Suk-yeol, announced his resignation from the ministry to accept his new posting. He will now take on the role of leading the party through the forthcoming general elections, slated for April. The PPP’s previous leader, Kim Gi-hyeon, resigned on Dec. 13.

PPP floor leader Yun Jae-ok emphasized Han’s popularity among younger and centrist voters, citing his leading position in opinion polls for the next party leader. Han’s role as the party’s new interim leader will be formalized after the party’s national committee approves his nomination, which is widely expected to be a formality.

Why It Matters

The PPP’s selection of Han as interim leader will likely stir mixed reactions within South Korea’s political circles. While some in the PPP welcome Han’s appointment, others express concern that his close ties to Yoon might reduce the party to merely an extension of the presidential office, undermining its independent political identity. It is not clear if Han will be able to bridge this divide within the ruling party.

The opposition Democratic Party has responded coolly to Han’s selection. A divisive figure among progressives, Han’s popularity in conservative circles is contrasted by skepticism from progressive voters. Further, heightened expectations within the PPP, some referring to Han as their “Yi Sun-shin,” a revered 16th-century Korean naval commander, could set an unrealistic bar for his performance. With only four months until the elections, it remains uncertain whether Han can significantly sway voter sentiment in the PPP’s favor, especially amid a politically divided electorate.
