South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol and first lady Kim Keon-hee will make a state visit to the Netherlands from Dec. 11 to 14, according to Kim Tae-hyo, South Korea’s principal deputy national security adviser. The state visit will begin with a meeting and dinner with Korean residents upon their arrival in Amsterdam. The official itinerary includes a welcome ceremony, wreath-laying at a war memorial and a luncheon with the Dutch King and Queen on Dec. 12, followed by a visit to ASML’s headquarters in Veldhoven.

Yoon will then head to The Hague for high-level meetings, including discussions with Dutch parliamentary leaders and Prime Minister Mark Rutte. Yoon will also attend a signing ceremony for multiple memorandums of understanding and a working luncheon hosted by Rutte. The visit will also feature a visit to the Yi Jun Peace Museum and a return to Amsterdam for a meeting with war veterans and a business forum.

Why It Matters

Yoon’s state visit to the Netherlands, particularly his tour of ASML’s headquarters, will likely mirror U.S. President Joe Biden’s 2022 visit to Samsung Electronics’ semiconductor plant. ASML, the leading manufacturer of lithography equipment essential for semiconductor production, plays a critical role in this industry. ASML’s decision to invest approximately $181 million in a new assembly facility in South Korea further cements this relationship.

This state visit gains further importance in the context of China’s move to restrict exports of key materials like gallium, germanium and graphite, which are vital in chipmaking and communications equipment. This situation has propelled countries like South Korea and the Netherlands to reassess and strengthen their semiconductor supply chains, which will result in the two countries agreeing to enhance their semiconductor partnership during Yoon’s visit.
