South Korea\u2019s <\/span>launch<\/span><\/a> of the first in a series of five indigenous military reconnaissance satellites last Friday \u2014 a project undertaken with SpaceX \u2014 grants the country something it has long sought: an independent space-based intelligence, surveillance and reconnaissance (<\/span>ISR<\/span><\/a>) capability.<\/span><\/p>\n This successful deployment reduces Seoul\u2019s reliance on Washington for space-based ISR inputs \u2014 significantly enhancing the ROK\u2019s strategic situational awareness. However, it also raises questions about the risks and challenges in an increasingly volatile Northeast Asia.<\/span><\/p>\n PROJECT 425<\/b><\/p>\n Friday\u2019s launch marked the initial phase of South Korea\u2019s independent space-based ISR development program, \u201cProject 425,\u201d initiated during the previous Moon Jae-in administration.<\/span><\/p>\n
