This occasion marked the first time a sitting president has attended the annual event, which has been organized by the National Revival Association since 1980. Park Geun-hye, the eldest daughter of Park Chung-hee and also a former South Korean president, was present as well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the official proceedings, Yoon and other attendees paid their respects at Park\u2019s tomb. In his address, Yoon highlighted Park\u2019s role in the \u201cMiracle on the Han River,\u201d a term referencing South Korea\u2019s period of rapid economic growth. Officials from the ruling People Power Party (PPP) and over 2,000 citizens joined the memorial service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yoon\u2019s attendance at Park Chung-hee\u2019s memorial service marks his first public appearance since returning from state visits to Saudi Arabia and Qatar. The significance of this visit is underscored by Yoon\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/10\/south-korea-stands-at-a-diplomatic-crossroads-as-yoons-approval-rating-plummets\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">recent dip in approval ratings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, notably from 33% to 25% in Seoul, and a more concerning drop from 58% to 45% in Daegu and North Gyeongsang Province, traditionally conservative strongholds. This evolving political backdrop presents challenges for the Yoon administration and the PPP.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a bid to promote unity and internal change, the PPP recently appointed <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.peoplepowerparty.kr\/news\/comment_view\/BBSDD0001\/98752\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctor Ihn Yohan<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, formerly John Alderman Linton, a naturalized Korean citizen, to lead its innovation committee. Ihn\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20231025004900315?section=search\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">promise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to lead committee members to the May 18 National Cemetery in Gwangju, a memorial for those involved in the Gwangju Uprising, indicates the party\u2019s attempt to appeal to voters in the Jeolla Province \u2014 a traditional stronghold of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP). However, the different symbolic gestures by Yoon, with his visit to Park\u2019s tomb, and Ihn, with his upcoming visit to the May 18 cemetery, suggest a potential lack of coordination between the Presidential Office and the ruling party.
