The <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/elaw.klri.re.kr\/eng_service\/lawView.do?hseq=25732&amp;lang=ENG\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">National Assembly Act<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> mandates that such motions be voted on within 72 hours of submission, setting the stage for a Thursday vote. This motion comes on the heels of President Yoon Suk-yeol\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/en.yna.co.kr\/view\/AEN20230919002354315?section=national\/politics\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">endorsement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to seek the parliament\u2019s approval for Lee\u2019s arrest. Lee faces multiple <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/03\/opposition-leader-indicted-over-development-corruption-scandal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">allegations<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, including breach of trust, bribery, involvement in a disputed land development project and unauthorized funds transfers to North Korea. With its 167-seat majority in the 297-member assembly, the DP can block this motion, echoing February\u2019s events where similar allegations against Lee were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/02\/south-koreas-opposition-leader-avoids-arrest-but-his-party-isnt-celebrating\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">thwarted<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in parliament. While the National Assembly will most likely approve the motion on Thursday owing to its majority, Yoon will likely dismiss it. He previously rejected two similar motions to dismiss foreign minister <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2022\/10\/seouls-diplomacy-left-weakened-after-parliament-votes-against-foreign-minister\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Park Jin<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and interior minister <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2023\/02\/how-interior-ministers-impeachment-could-worsen-south-koreas-partisan-divide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Lee Sang-min<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Thursday\u2019s parliamentary session, which will see a vote on the motion to arrest DP leader Lee Jae-myung and the dismissal of Prime Minister Han Duck-soo, promises to be a particularly volatile political event. The stakes are high, and the repercussions of either outcome could profoundly impact South Korea\u2019s political landscape.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If the DP votes to save Lee from arrest again, it will raise eyebrows nationwide. While Lee had made a \u201cde facto\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yna.co.kr\/view\/AKR20230920100151001?section=politics\/all&amp;site=topnews01\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">plea<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to fellow DP lawmakers for support from the hospital, where he described the motion to arrest him as a campaign led by a \u201cpoliticized prosecutors\u2019 office,\u201d he also publicly claimed in June that he would willingly give up his parliamentary immunity from arrest.
