South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol is set to visit New York next week for the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) meeting, the ROK presidential office announced Thursday. During his five-day visit, Yoon will deliver a keynote speech on Sept. 20, which will touch upon pressing global issues, including the Ukraine war and an evolving nuclear threat from North Korea. Yoon will also hold a series of bilateral meetings with leaders such as U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres. Yoon, during the meeting, is also expected to outline Seoul’s contribution to addressing global economic disparities and action plans as a non-permanent member of the Security Council for 2024-2025.

Yoon’s previous visit to New York last September resulted in around $1.15 billion in investment from seven U.S. and Canadian companies. His upcoming visit takes on a business dimension once again, with the participation of prominent Korean business leaders, reportedly including SK Inc. Chairman Chey Tae-won, Hyundai Motor Group Executive Chair Chung Euisun, Samsung Electronics Chairman Lee Jae-yong and LG Corp. Chairman Koo Kwang-mo. The high-profile business delegation accompanying Yoon is likely aimed at furthering business cooperation with U.S. industries and advocating for Busan’s bid to host the World Expo 2030.

Why It Matters

The annual U.N. meeting will be the last big international gathering before the final vote for the World Expo 2030 scheduled for Nov. 28. Busan’s candidacy for the expo has been a top diplomatic focus for Yoon, who has invested substantial resources into securing the bid. Yoon will likely see the UNGA as a final platform to garner support, especially from potential swing-vote countries.

The timing of Yoon’s UNGA visit coincides with heightened military activity in the East Asian region. The meeting will come a week after North Korean leader Kim Jong Un ended his pandemic-induced isolation with a summit in Russia, during which Vladimir Putin expressed support for North Korea’s satellite program. While Yoon will most likely bring up topics related to such security problems and seek the international community’s support to hold the DPRK accountable for U.N. Security Council sanction breaches, like his speeches at international platforms in the past, Yoon’s remarks in the past few weeks during ASEAN and G20 summit meetings point to a low likelihood of him voicing Russia-specific condemnations in a straightforward manner.
