South Korea’s tech heavyweight, Naver Corp., announced the launch of HyperCLOVA X, a new and advanced Korean large language model (LLM) for artificial intelligence (AI), at the Team NAVER Conference Dan 2023 in Grand InterContinental Seoul Parnas on Thursday. The unveiling comes as a response to the global AI trend sparked by OpenAI’s ChatGPT. This move not only positions HyperCLOVA X as Naver’s next growth engine but also underscores the company’s pivot toward AI-led business initiatives. Naver CEO Choi Soo-yeon highlighted the company’s R&D investment, which accounts for 22% of its operating revenue, and the support of Naver’s in-house internet data center in bringing HyperCLOVA X to fruition.

Alongside HyperCLOVA X, Naver introduced CLOVA X, an AI-driven interactive service built upon the new model and Cue:, a generative AI chatbot slated for a launch next month. CLOVA X, commencing its beta testing soon, offers dynamic responses and features the ability for multi-turn conversations. A unique “skill feature” is incorporated in CLOVA X, which interlinks multiple service application programming interfaces, enhancing answer quality and user experience. Meanwhile, Cue: is designed to comprehend intricate queries, providing answers from various viewpoints. Choi also highlighted the transformative potential of Naver’s generative AI products across its suite of services, from search and commerce to advertising.

Why It Matters

At face value, Naver might not seem like a direct competitor in the global AI market, yet the introduction of HyperCLOVA X reveals a broader ambition. Rather than challenging these global giants head-on, Naver will likely zero in on untapped niche markets — regions overlooked by U.S. and Chinese tech titans, such as the Middle East. Linguistic niches such as Japan and Southeast Asia also serve as market opportunities. But there is no guarantee that Naver’s gambit will be successful. Tech giants like OpenAI and Google are formidable competitors even in markets Naver seeks to tap.

Naver’s AI drive occurs against a backdrop of financial turbulence. By June, the company’s stock price had plummeted 11.28% from a February all-time high of $174.39 (230,500 won). As of Thursday, the stock shows signs of recovery, hovering at $173.25 (229,000 won). Foreign investors net-sold Naver amounting to $377 million (498.6 billion won) in the first half of the year, but their position shifted as they net-bought $58.9 million (77.8 billion won) worth of the company’s stocks from July to the beginning of August.

Beyond its tech aspirations, HyperCLOVA X could influence investor sentiment and the company’s broader financial trajectory. As Naver seeks diversification, especially as it loses market share to Google, indicating a shift in user preferences, HyperCLOVA X’s reception and performance become even more crucial.
