The company\u2019s Redback IFV was chosen over Germany\u2019s Rheinmetall Lynx KF41 IFV for the $4.8 billion contract. This acquisition program, designed to replace the Australian Army\u2019s fleet of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.gov.au\/our-work\/equipment-uniforms\/equipment\/vehicles\/m113as4-armoured-personnel-carrier\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">M113 armored vehicles<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that were introduced in the 1960s, will involve the procurement of 129 new IFVs.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Upon contract finalization, the Redback is slated for production at the Hanwha Armored Vehicle Center of Excellence (H-ACE) in Geelong, Victoria, Australia. This move will likely bolster defense capabilities and regional arms industry cooperation between South Korea and Australia.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Australian government\u2019s decision to replace its M113 armored vehicles with Hanwha Defense Australia&#8217;s Redback Infantry Fighting Vehicles (IFVs) signifies a shift in its defense strategy and procurement approach. Initially, the tender called for the supply of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.theaustralian.com.au\/nation\/defence\/south-korea-hanwha-favourite-to-supply-adf-18bn-in-infantry-vehicles\/news-story\/89dc74f73b51eb06670d9d1baedb7dca\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">450 next-generation IFVs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The Australian government reduced that number by more than two-thirds after publishing its <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.defence.gov.au\/about\/reviews-inquiries\/defence-strategic-review\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Defense Strategic Review<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in April in a bid to channel funds toward other capabilities, including guided missiles and unmanned systems.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">South Korea\u2019s reputation in the global defense market will likely enhance further with this deal. The ROK <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/europe-business-poland-seoul-south-korea-6d7a06d58323ef77fd4ce3024110e0e8\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">swiftly delivered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the first shipment of tanks and howitzers to Poland in December \u2014 mere months after their <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/koreapro.org\/2022\/09\/south-koreas-defense-industry-looks-to-europe-with-major-polish-arms-deal\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">defense deal<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> was finalized. This past success could have contributed to Australia\u2019s confidence in selecting Hanwha as a partner, potentially impacting future collaborations and standing in the defense market.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are risks associated with this project, primarily due to Australia\u2019s expanding defense commitments. Some analysts <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.aspistrategist.org.au\/aukus-kicks-australias-military-transformation-into-gear\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">question the relevance<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of IFVs in the Indo-Pacific security environment, suggesting that Australia\u2019s defense spending might be better allocated elsewhere.
