Hanwha Ocean and Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade (MOIT) signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) in Vietnam on July 22, focusing on comprehensive cooperation in training, developing and recruiting high-quality human resources. Hanwha Ocean, a global leader in the shipbuilding and maritime transportation industries, plans to spearhead a pilot project to mitigate the shortage of high-quality labor in the shipbuilding sector and serve the company’s long-term investment plans in Vietnam.

Hanwha Ocean has partnered with Green Peace Holdings, a Vietnamese company recognized for its role as a tier-one supplier to Samsung Vietnam. MOIT mediated the MOU to cultivate high-quality human resources within the industry and trade sector, encourage collaboration and advance comprehensive South Korea-Vietnam relations.

Why It Matters

The signing of this MOU between Hanwha Ocean, Vietnam’s Ministry of Industry and Trade and Green Peace Holdings marks a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to deepen economic cooperation between South Korea and Vietnam. This comes in the wake of South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol’s visit to Vietnam in June, during which the two nations agreed to expand economic cooperation by increasing bilateral trade to $150 billion by 2030. The partnership addresses labor shortages in the shipbuilding industry, a pivotal sector to both economies, by enhancing the training, development and recruitment of high-quality human resources.

This development aligns with the ROK Justice Ministry’s announcement to increase the annual quota for skilled worker visas to 35,000 this year from just 2,000 last year. This significant jump aims to ease chronic labor shortages, particularly in sectors like shipbuilding and agriculture, strained by South Korea’s rapidly aging population. Hanwha Ocean’s initiative holds significant potential for contributing to the relief of these labor pressures, supporting the economic growth of both nations and fostering closer South Korea-Vietnam relations.
