The event was attended by delegates from eight African countries and Kevin Urama, the deputy director of the African Development Bank. Minister Chung Hwang-keun vowed to devote efforts towards boosting Africa\u2019s rice self-sufficiency.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">During the conference, representatives from the eight participating African nations underscored the unique approach of the K-Rice Belt project, which aims to foster Africa\u2019s rice production by leveraging South Korea\u2019s experiences and technologies. Additionally, the ROK and the eight African nations signed a memorandum of understanding (MOU) to establish a long-term international cooperation framework. Following this, a seminar was held to discuss world food security, Korea\u2019s Official Development Assistance (ODA) in agriculture and strategies for the successful execution of the K-Rice Belt initiative.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Why It Matters<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rice is a staple food in many West and Central African countries, forming a critical part of their dietary intake. However, local production only meets about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.reuters.com\/world\/africa\/south-korea-help-africa-cut-dependence-rice-imports-minister-2023-07-06\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">60%<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the demand. By sharing its rice seeds and agricultural technology, South Korea is offering these countries the means to increase self-sufficiency and by extension, food security. This is significant in a region where Russia\u2019s invasion of Ukraine, a major grain exporter, could potentially lead to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.un.org\/africarenewal\/magazine\/february-2023\/one-year-later-impact-russian-conflict-ukraine-africa\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">long-term food security issues<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. South Korea\u2019s efforts to boost rice production in Africa through the K-Rice Belt project could address a critical vulnerability and work towards ensuring the continent\u2019s food supply.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The partnership also brings strategic benefits to South Korea. It opens opportunities for Economic Partnership Agreements (EPA) with African nations, creating mutually beneficial trade networks. These could encompass various aspects of trade cooperation such as supply chain, climate change and healthcare. Moreover, the launch of the African Continental Free Trade Area (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/au-afcfta.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">AfCFTA<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) in 2018, the world\u2019s largest free trade area by the number of participating countries, presents significant trade opportunities.
