President Yoon Suk-yeol’s approval rating has risen to 42%, marking a consistent three-week growth, according to a survey by Realmeter. The poll, encompassing 2,505 eligible voters, revealed a three-percentage-point rise from the previous week, with Yoon’s approval rating crossing the 40% mark for the first time since May. In contrast, his disapproval rating dropped to a three-week low of 55.1%, a decrease of 2.4 percentage points.

The most substantial increase was seen among respondents in their 60s, followed by those in their 20s and 30s. Non-partisan voters demonstrated a significant rise in approval by 9.8 percentage points. Conversely, the disapproval rating climbed among supporters of the minor opposition Justice Party by 2.6 percentage points. The poll holds a 95% confidence level, with a margin of error of plus or minus two percentage points.

Why It Matters

The reasons behind the recent improvement in President Yoon’s approval ratings over the past three weeks remain uncertain. During this period, Yoon has accomplished several foreign policy goals. During his visit to Paris, he advocated for Busan’s bid to host the 2030 World Expo and reinforced political and security relations with Vietnam. Concurrently, the Ministry of Finance reported encouraging signs of recovery in South Korea’s economy, with key indicators such as industrial output and exports showing positive trends.

Meanwhile, the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) has been beleaguered by a series of unforced errors, including appointing an anti-American activist to helm the party’s innovation committee and a controversial meeting between DP leader Lee Jae-myung and Chinese Ambassador Xing Haiming. However, Yoon also sparked controversy by critiquing the inclusion of questions not covered in state school textbooks in the Suneung, the national standardized university entrance examination.
