In the wake of escalating economic pressures and inflationary trends, many young South Korean are turning to a unique digital outlet for financial support: geojibang, or “beggars’ room,” a public chat room on KakaoTalk, the country’s ubiquitous mobile messaging app.

Geojibang, birthed this year, has become an online forum for young South Koreans to scrutinize their spending habits. Participants of this chat room ironically refer to themselves as “beggars,” an intentional acknowledgment of their financial status or lack thereof. They frequently share stories of their daily expenses and endorse thriftiness, often through harsh encouragement, to promote saving.

For instance, when the author shared in a geojibang forum about treating herself to a cocktail at a bar, it instantly elicited responses from other members. They encouraged her to “simply go to bed” and even provided homemade cocktail recipes for her to try.

The community operates under one fundamental principle: any expenditure beyond those for basic necessities is regarded as a transgression. This culture of frugality is starkly different from the flexing culture marked by excessive spending, causing some to wonder if the emergence of geojibang will permanently impact the lavish spending habits previously associated with young South Koreans.

The geojibang chat rooms have attracted a sizable audience of South Korean youth. With varying membership based on demographics like gender and age, some even sport waiting lists for interested entrants.

Scholars ascribe the burgeoning popularity of geojibang to a shared sense of community and solidarity within these online spaces, simultaneously bolstering an individual’s resolve to economize.

“Economizing and keeping habits of thrift is a challenging task. So, young people have gathered together to create fun ways of doing it together. Geojibang, in essence, is the gamification of being thrifty,” Lee Eun-hee, a professor of consumer science at Inha University, told Korea Pro.

CHANGING CONSUMPTION BEHAVIOR

South Koreans’ demand for high-end goods is well-documented. Morgan Stanley reported earlier this year that Koreans top the chart for per capita spending on personal luxury goods, averaging around $325 per person.

A striking aspect of this trend is the demographic driving it: young South Koreans, particularly those in their twenties and thirties. These consumers are often willing to allocate their entire monthly income to luxury purchases, a practice driven partly by the desire to showcase their acquisitions on social media.

However, the erstwhile “flexing” culture is increasingly ceding ground to financial prudence in the face of skyrocketing inflation and a stubbornly stagnant job market.

Recent data from the Bank of Korea underscores the financial predicament confronting the nation’s youth. Household debt for individuals under 30 rose by 27.4% between 2019 and 2022 — a growth rate surpassing that of all other age cohorts. High-interest rates further compound this financial vulnerability.

In response to this mounting financial pressure, some debt-burdened South Koreans are resorting to pawn shops for loans, despite facing interest rates as high as 20%, to settle their credit card debts.

This shifting economic climate is becoming increasingly visible on social media. While posts flaunting extravagant meals and vacations once dominated the feeds of many young South Koreans, a different narrative is gaining traction.

Starting last year, an increasing number of social media posts boast about savings or spending no money at all, a trend that encourages individuals to refrain from discretionary spending.

CONSUMPTION POLARIZATION

The parallel growth of geojibang and flex cultures has culminated in what some analysts now term “consumption polarization.” This phenomenon represents a stark contrast between those who indulge in luxury goods and those who cut back on basic meals.

Some experts attribute this significant divergence in consumption habits to the dwindling middle class. However, it’s worth noting that some individuals embody elements of both the geojibang and flex cultures simultaneously, as participation in geojibang isn’t always motivated by a desire for long-term savings.

For instance, some individuals may refrain from spending any money throughout the week, only to indulge in premium desserts at upscale hotels over the weekend. In researching this report, the author found numerous participants in the geojibang culture who were saving up for vacations in Europe.

This consumption pattern has been made possible by the robust purchasing power of South Korea’s youth.

Research published in Science in 2014 revealed an intriguing correlation: a nation’s per capita purchasing power tends to increase when the birth rate falls below 2.1, known as the replacement level. In 2022, South Korea recorded the world’s lowest birth rate at 0.78.

A contributing factor to this phenomenon is the rise in one-person households and the increasing tendency for young South Koreans to forgo starting families. With a growing percentage of their incomes dedicated solely to personal expenditure, some unmarried individuals free from familial financial obligations practice extreme frugality in certain spending areas.

This allows them to indulge in other areas, such as extravagant vacations or premium dessert experiences at five-star hotel restaurants. The retail sector has also spurred this dichotomy in spending habits, which has intensified the polarization by offering products at extreme ends of the pricing spectrum.

For instance, GS25, one of the nation’s largest convenience store chains, reintroduced the previously discontinued “Kim Hye-ja lunch box” at $3.50 (4,500 won), with additional discounts bringing the cost down to a mere $2. Conversely, dessert prices are escalating in upscale hotels and restaurants, with single servings easily reaching between $78 to $100 (100,000 to 130,000 won).

Experts predict that until a more stable economic landscape emerges, this dichotomy of extreme thriftiness and extravagant spending will continue to coexist among South Korea’s youth.
