South Korea’s ruling People Power Party (PPP) continued its criticism of the main opposition Democratic Party (DP) leader Lee Jae-myung for his recent meeting with Chinese Ambassador to South Korea Xing Haiming, calling it an “unprecedented diplomatic disaster.” PPP leader Kim Gi-hyeon stated the meeting didn’t advance South Korea’s national interests and instead exposed the DP’s willingness to harm South Korea’s national dignity as long as it tarnishes the Yoon administration’s reputation. Kim also made a sarcastic comment regarding Lee’s explanation that his meeting with Xing was in support of South Korea’s national interest, asking if subservience to China served the country’s national interest.

Lee’s meeting with Xing, which was streamed live on the DP’s YouTube page, showed Xing reading a prepared statement for about 15 minutes while Lee sat quietly during Xing’s prepared statement.

In addition to criticizing Lee, Shin Won-sik, a PPP member of the National Defense Committee, also criticized Xing on social media. Shin said that Xing wouldn’t have made his “reckless remarks if China did not view South Korea as a vassal state” and suggested declaring him persona non grata if he didn’t apologize. The PPP also condemned China’s retaliatory act of summoning South Korea’s Ambassador to China, Chung Jae-ho. PPP spokesperson Kang Min-kuk cast blame on the DP for China’s “condescending attitude,” attributing it to the DP’s siding with the Chinese Communist Party.

Dear readers,

At KOREA PRO, we are committed to providing engaging and informative content tailored to our discerning audience. He had been previously cautioned in 2021 for his comments concerning then-presidential candidate Yoon Suk-yeol. “If China desires the removal of THAAD, it should consider dismantling its long-range radars situated close to our national border,” Yoon stated in a 2021 interview. In response, Xing penned an opinion piece. “Mr. Yoon mentioned China’s radar, but I fail to comprehend his statement. I’ve not once heard from my Korean friends any suggestion that China’s radar poses a threat to South Korea,” Xing asserted.
