President Yoon Suk-yeol conducted a series of bilateral talks with the leaders of five Pacific Island nations in Seoul, discussing strategies to bolster relationships in areas such as climate change and development cooperation. Yoon emphasized South Korea’s commitment to freedom and the rule of law, expressing a desire for trust-based relations with these nations. He advocated for the evaluation of bilateral cooperation and the expansion of mutually beneficial relations in areas like development, climate change, fisheries and healthcare.

The five Pacific Island leaders convened in Seoul to attend the inaugural South Korea-Pacific Island Nations summit, scheduled for Monday and Tuesday. This event, aimed at fortifying cooperation among island countries in the region, is expected to include leaders and senior officials from all 18 members of the Pacific Islands Forum (PIF).

Dear readers,

At KOREA PRO, we are committed to providing engaging and informative content tailored to our discerning audience. Recognizing the significance of your perspectives in enriching our offerings, we cordially extend an invitation for your participation in a brief 5-minute survey. This opportunity allows us to capture your invaluable feedback and insights, which we greatly appreciate and consider integral to our ongoing commitment to service excellence.

Why It Matters

Fortifying ties with Pacific Island nations aligns with South Korea’s Indo-Pacific strategy and the multilateral 2050 Strategy for the Blue Pacific Continent. Expanded engagement with the region can foster cooperation in areas such as healthcare, fisheries and climate change response while solidifying South Korea’s global image. Climate change, which poses disproportionate risks due to rising sea levels, is a primary concern for many Pacific Island nations. South Korea can provide aid, expertise and resources to mitigate these challenges. Between 2008 and 2020, South Korea contributed $107.66 million in official development assistance (ODA) to the Pacific, representing less than 1% of South Korea’s annual ODA spending, mainly targeting healthcare, fisheries and climate change response projects.

Developing relations with Pacific Island nations can also benefit South Korea diplomatically. South Korea is seeking the support of these nations for its bid to host the 2030 Busan Expo. Moreover, South Korea is intensifying its diplomatic efforts to secure a non-permanent seat on the United Nations Security Council (UNSC). Strengthened ties with Pacific Island nations could be helpful in achieving these objectives.
