During the 43rd anniversary of the Gwangju Democratization Movement, President Yoon Suk-yeol pledged to confront any threats to freedom and democracy. In his remarks, Yoon emphasized the significance of the “May spirit,” identifying it as a unifying force and integral to the liberal democratic spirit outlined in the ROK Constitution. He highlighted the sacrifices made during the movement, acknowledging the courage of those who defended the values of liberal democracy and human rights. Yoon expressed gratitude to the families of the victims and joined them in singing the uprising’s signature hymn, “March for the Beloved.”

This is a noteworthy event as it marks the second consecutive year that a conservative president has attended the annual ceremony. Previous conservative presidents only attended the event once during their tenures, taking issue with the hymn. The ceremony also drew participation from nearly 90 members of the ruling People Power Party (PPP) and about 100 lawmakers from the main opposition Democratic Party (DP).

Dear readers,

At KOREA PRO, we are committed to providing engaging and informative content tailored to our discerning audience. This opportunity allows us to capture your invaluable feedback and insights, which we greatly appreciate and consider integral to our ongoing commitment to service excellence.

Why It Matters

Although this is the second time marking his attendance at the event honoring the Gwangju Democratization Movement, President Yoon Suk-yeol has drawn flak from opposition parties for refusing to back the Democratic Party’s (DP) proposed amendment to enshrine the spirit of the 1980 uprising in the Constitution’s preamble. This move appears to challenge one of Yoon’s campaign pledges, though he contends that the DP’s proposal “disrespects the spirit” of the pro-democracy movement, suspecting it of being a diversion tactic amid the party’s own entanglement in corruption scandals. A spokesperson for the presidential office reiterated Yoon’s dedication to fulfilling his promise of integrating the spirit of the Gwangju Movement into the Constitution, but insists it should follow “appropriate procedures.”

Yoon’s commitment to bolster the innovative prowess of Gwangju and Honam, focusing on the proliferation of artificial intelligence (AI) and other advanced scientific technologies, is a noteworthy highlight of his address. This strategy forms a key facet of the Yoon administration’s economic agenda, intent on transforming the region into South Korea’s AI hub. Although traditionally a progressive bastion, certain parts of the region showed support for Yoon in the last presidential election, thereby suggesting potential shifts in the regional political landscape.
