Chinese foreign ministry spokesperson Mao Ning <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fmprc.gov.cn\/eng\/xwfw_665399\/s2510_665401\/2511_665403\/202304\/t20230427_11067845.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">characterized<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> the decision as a \u201cresult of a Cold War mentality\u201d and added that it \u201cundermines\u201d the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty and \u201churts the strategic interest of other countries.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The opposition from Beijing to the deployment of U.S. nuclear ballistic missile submarines was likely intensified by the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.whitehouse.gov\/briefing-room\/statements-releases\/2023\/04\/26\/leaders-joint-statement-in-commemoration-of-the-70th-anniversary-of-the-alliance-between-the-united-states-of-america-and-the-republic-of-korea\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">joint statement<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> from the two leaders, in which they emphasized the importance of preserving peace and stability in the Taiwan Strait.
